CLAY
Intrigued by the tactility and versatility of clay, Shae trained in ceramics before taking up photography and video. Her early project, Clay, draws these strands together. Instead of creating objects to be fired in a kiln and made hard and shiny, Shae decided to take clay to the streets, creating miniature ephemeral artworks, moments of clay then memorialised through the camera.
Clay brings together the handmade and industrial, exploring urban spaces whilst referencing a cracked natural landscape and earth. Whether pressed into access grids in the road or drizzled in between cobblestones each work highlights the beauty of clay, this processed dirt; whilst drawing it into the history and spaces of Melbournes CBD as it turns to dust before the camera.
Exhibited at Penpals: Post Conversation, RMIT School of Art Gallery 2012.
